History of The Orchard

The story of The Orchard in Kent is one of history, transformation, and heartfelt dedication. Nestled in the modern parish of Downswood, this remarkable venue has its roots in the 14th century, where it was originally known as Otham Grove or Otham Lodge, a farmhouse supporting the nearby orchards. Today, many of its original features remain intact, including the striking Viking oak roof beams that tell tales of its ancient past.

The lower Oak Rooms, now an elegant space for celebrations, were once used as shelter for farm animals—a testament to the building’s agricultural origins. Over the centuries, the venue underwent significant changes, with renovations in the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries lending it the charming Wealden character that defines its appearance today.

In the 20th century, the property transitioned into a pub, aptly named The Orchard Spot, referencing its location on Spot Lane. It became a cherished community hub, drawing locals and visitors alike, especially for the beloved Friday evening dances. The venue’s history is enriched by the colourful personalities it hosted, including its former owner, Nigel, a true local character.

Since acquiring The Orchard in 2008, we have poured our hearts into preserving its heritage while transforming it into the enchanting wedding venue it is today. From its humble beginnings to its current status as a private haven for weddings, every detail has been crafted with love and care. Our dedicated team—our “big family”—has worked tirelessly to ensure this space radiates warmth and charm, something we hope you’ll feel when you visit.

In 2012, we made the decision to close the pub and dedicate the venue exclusively to weddings and events. From the moment you pass through the gates, the venue becomes your private oasis, surrounded by the lush fields of Otham. We take immense pride in delivering unparalleled hospitality, offering the best food, service, and experiences to make your day unforgettable.

While we’ve sympathetically updated the property to enhance its features, we’ve also added breathtaking new spaces. Our Lodge Garden and woodland area provide a tranquil, picturesque setting for wedding parties, complete with a serene herb garden and thriving wildlife. The secret garden, completed last year, offers a fourth area for couples to say their vows, highlighted by a stunning church-gated entrance adorned with a wisteria walkway.
